NASCAR reinstates Cody Ware 8 months after indefinite suspension

NASCAR reinstated Cody Ware on Tuesday, eight months after he was indefinitely suspended following assault and strangulation charges.

Fox Sports reported the criminal charges against Ware were dropped last week, clearing a pathway for his return. Ware had been accused of assaulting his then-girlfriend, who was later charged with assault herself (that charge was also dropped, per Fox). Fox Sports reported civil litigation in the case will also be dismissed.

“I’ve maintained my innocence from the very beginning, even as there was a rush to judgment by others. I’m glad this entire matter is behind me because it’s been an incredibly difficult eight months,” Ware said in a statement Tuesday. “With all of the allegations being dismissed, I’m thankful to have my life back.”

Ware lost his ride at the Rick Ware Racing team, owned by his father, due to the suspension. The team used a variety of other drivers for the remainder of the season in its No. 51 car. NASCAR on Tuesday said Ware is “approved to return to all NASCAR racing activity,” though it’s unclear what opportunities he may have with RWR.

The 28-year-old Ware has made 97 career starts in the NASCAR Cup Series and has one top-10 finish (sixth place at Daytona in August 2022).
